- High-quality students
- Availability of land
- Engine for economic growth
- History of cross-disciplinary work
Opportunities
- Planned hiring (and the ability to change culture)
- New programs to feed increased regional needs
- Improved state funding (and the ability to improve infrastructure)
Weaknesses and Threats
Weaknesses
- Lack of incentives for outreach
- Challenges presented by growth (described graphically by Tom Eames)
- UC bureaucracy (slow response to change)
- Campus inexperience dealing with industry
- City of Davis resistance to growth
- Academic Senate makes change difficult
- Poor infrastructure and physical facilities
- Lack of appropriate national and international
recognition
Threats
- CSUS and 10th campus
- Decreased public funding
- Conflicts of interest that may arise from private funding
- Competition for high-quality faculty
- Private education and training
Priorities/Action Items
- Provide opportunities for excellence in outreach to be rewarded in the personnel process.
- Explore Sacramento-based professional masters programs (e.g. engineering)
- Streamline the technology transfer (e.g. patent) process
- Train faculty in outreach
- Improve infrastructure and physical facilities
- Explore new models of development which have the joint goals of outreach and development
