Goals

1. Increased involvement of undergraduates in K-12 teaching:

a. This will enhance their education and increase likelihood for their choice of career in teaching.

2. Expansion of programs that prepare teachers and support those already in K-12:

a. More slots in the credential program
b. Summer institutes for current K-12 teachers to enhance their understanding of material they teach
c. Develop programs to promote teaching as a rewarding career
d. Enhance faculty contribution to teacher preparation: tuition waivers for teachers coming back for MA

3. Develop programs to encourage teaching as an attractive career option. Engage current undergrads to consider becoming teachers.

4. Reward outreach efforts on part of faculty and staff. Work load policies should consider outreach. Promotion and tenure actions should include a component of outreach evaluation.

5. Establish ongoing discourses of respect between K-16 segments.

Other ideas:

Professional development for teachers should have an element of non-goal seeking.

Develop projects in social science and humanities similar to math project.

Bring students to the campus.

Expansion of opportunity rather than fixed number of seats.

Integration of technology into outreach efforts.

Junior education academies...juniors could enroll in courses that would be pre-service...linked to K-12 schools.

Develop a major for educators.

Strengthen retention efforts.

Integrate into teacher prep programs the knowledge and practice of integrating diverse student groups
