  1. How can we expand the pool of high quality graduate students attracted to our programs? In the area of student support, how can we use our existing resources more effectively and how can we increase our resources?
    • Fellowships from gifts and endowments (increase campus priority)
    • Industrial affiliates
    • Double block grant funds
    • Increase federal training grant/fellowships
    • Change nonresident tuition policy
      • Eliminate NRT for domestic nonresidents
      • Eliminate NRT for international nonresidents.
    • Faculty travel dollars and senior graduate student travel dollars.
    • Good faculty – good students.
    • Good students – good faculty.
    • Must be focused, not broad (campus level) approach.
    • More competitive support packages (dollars, duration).
       
  2. What kinds of curricular change/innovation should be considered in our programs?
    • Alumni "feedback "seminars.
    • Minors (there are now barriers that prevent students from getting courses at correct levels).
    • Need better coordination among faculty teaching similar courses.
  3. What kinds of mentoring work best? What steps can be taken to improve mentoring?
    • Attention to gender differences – female role models
    • "Culturalization" of graduate students
      • Conferences
      • Review papers
    • Write proposals
       
  4. What kinds of placement efforts, both academic and non-academic, work best? How can we improve what we currently do in this area.
    • Word of mouth faculty contacts.
    • Alumni contacts.
    • Increase graduate student travel award money.
    • Increase ICC involvement with graduate students.
    • Better career and placement tracking.
