  1. How can we expand the pool of high quality graduate students attracted to our programs? In the area of student support, how can we use our existing resources more effectively and how can we increase our resources?
    • Excellent Web page for recruitment.
    • Graduate programs ought to have organized efforts for recruitment: making transparencies available for on site visits, open house, graduate student involvement, etc.
       
  2. What kinds of curricular change/innovation should be considered in our programs?
    • Core courses are important.
    • When appropriate, it is good to have interdisciplinary degrees, e.g., Ph.D. in Physics with a Master in computer science.
    • Expand graduate pool by offering courses targeted for careers in industry.
       
  3. What kinds of mentoring work best? What steps can be taken to improve mentoring?
    • Encourage shared mentoring, especially among the thesis committee members.
    • Encourage good mentoring by establishing evaluation process of mentoring.
       
  4. What kinds of placement efforts, both academic and non-academic, work best? How can we improve what we currently do in this area
    • Every graduate program ought to have a directed effort to help placement of graduates, including being proactive in working together the career Placement Center.
    • Mentors’ efforts are important in placement.
    • Do not limit placement to academia only; placements in places other then academia ought to be considered as successes.
