Chancellor's Colloquium Distinguished Speaker Series 2012-13
The UC Davis Chancellor’s Colloquium Distinguished Speakers series brings together several distinguished scholars and government leaders who promise to spark engaging conversations with the academic community and broader public around pressing issues of our time.
The series is intended to heighten local and national awareness of research at UC Davis and the speakers will also share their vision for university-based research in the 21st century.
After each forum, a faculty member will be invited to comment and initiate a Q&A discussion with the audience.
These events are free and open to the public. Here are the planned speakers for the 2012-13 series, with more information to follow:

Yu, president of the American Council of Learned Societies since 2003, is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and on the board of directors of the Chiang Ching-Kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange.
Public universities at a time of austerity and crisis: Some lessons from Greece (YouTube video, 1 hour 20 minutes, 11.7.12)
John Panaretos is a professor of probability and statistics at the Athens University of Economics and Business. He was Greece's deputy minister of education, lifelong learning and religious affairs from October 2009 to June 2011. Panaretos has also served as the education advisor to former Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou and as Greece's representative to the Open Government Partnership.
Quantum cascade lasers: From lab curiosity to tools (YouTube video, 1 hour 21 minutes, 12.4.12)
Kumar Patel is a professor of physics with a joint appointment in electrical engineering at UCLA. He served as UCLA's vice chancellor for research through 1999. He invented the carbon dioxide laser and has been nominated for a Nobel Prize multiple times.
Farming in the 21st Century: A woman's perspective from South Africa (YouTube video, 1 hour 12 minutes, 2.5.13)
Brylyne Chitsunge is an internationally acclaimed expert and facilitator of the Nigeria-South Africa Group on Agriculture. Dr. Chitsunge has been a tireless advocate for farmers in her native South Africa for many years, traveling the world to discuss issues such as sustainable agriculture, climate change, and supporting women farmers. In the fall of 2011, Chitsunge addressed the Global Science Conference on Climate-Smart Agriculture about the role of the farmer in addressing climate change.

Composer Mark Adamo is currently working on his third full-length opera, The Gospel of Mary Magdalene. Aside from his previous operas, his work also includes choral and orchestral work.

Berlowitz, president and the William T. Golden Chair of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, is the first woman to serve as chief executive officer of the Academy and was named its 45th president in 2010.
