Initiatives
The future of the public university
For the past several years, the University of California has faced extremely difficult choices as it attempts to cope with sharply diminished funding from the state of California. Inevitably, determining the right ways to respond to this more austere economic climate has proved a formidable task — as well as a source of passionate debate within the UC system and beyond. At the center of the debate is the question of what UC — and any public university — should and can be in the 21st century. Since the campus events on and around Nov. 18, 2011, the topic has assumed a special relevance, and urgency, for UC Davis. In response, Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi and Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Ralph J. Hexter have committed to lead a dialogue on the future of the public university.
