There is no charge to attend; however, tickets are required for admission and can be obtained online or in person at the Mondavi Center box office.

On Friday, Oct. 27, the pomp and circumstance in the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts will not be for commencement, but for the investiture of UC Davis’ new chancellor, Gary S. May. The academic installation ceremony will be part of a very special Homecoming Weekend, including the Investiture and reception on Friday, Pajamarino Friday night and football on Saturday. See calendar of events below.

May took office Aug. 1 as UC Davis’ seventh chancellor (since becoming a general campus of the university in 1959), coming here from Georgia Tech where he earned his undergraduate degree and subsequently joined the faculty — serving for 26 years, the last five as dean of engineering.

The Investiture — a formal ceremony of conferring the authority and symbols of high office — will begin with a procession of faculty and campus leaders in their caps and gowns and Ph.D. hoods (the color of each faculty member’s hood denotes where they earned their Ph.Ds.).

UC President Janet Napolitano will preside over the Investiture ceremony, removing May’s UC Berkeley hood — he received his master’s degree and Ph.D. at Berkeley — and replacing it with a UC Davis hood, and presenting him with the Chancellor’s Medal.

May will deliver remarks, and his longtime mentor, G. Wayne Clough, will give the keynote. Clough is secretary emeritus of the Smithsonian Institution and president emeritus of Georgia Tech.

The Investiture will be from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Mondavi Center’s Jackson Hall with a reception immediately following.

There is no charge to attend; however, tickets are required for admission and can be obtained online or in person at the Mondavi Center box office.

The investiture also will be livestreamed.
