Students welcomed to new academic year

Dear Students:

Welcome to the new fall quarter at UC Davis! We’re excited to have you joining us.

This is a great time in your life as you pursue your dreams and aspirations. We take such pride in being a part of your present and your future.

With classes beginning on Thursday, Sept. 24, there are many reasons to begin the year with much enthusiasm and optimism. Whether you are just now beginning your studies at UC Davis or continuing them, you have worked hard and overcome many challenges to arrive at this point.

As you may know, some professors have called for a systemwide walkout of all University of California faculty on what will be our first day of classes. They are protesting the way UC is handling the budget crisis and its decision that faculty may not take furlough days on assigned teaching days.

When UC decided that faculty furlough days could not be taken on instructional days, it was thinking of students. Even in this financial crisis, the university wants to do everything it can to ensure that you continue to receive a world-class education.

I want to advise and encourage you to attend your scheduled classes. If a class is not covered, I encourage you to call the department office for guidance. Department phone numbers are available online at www.ucdavis.edu.

I personally welcome you to the new academic year. Go to class with all the energy and expectation of a wonderful year of learning ahead.
