A Letter From UC Davis Chancellor Gary S. May

Dear UC Davis Community,

Since my confirmation in February, I’ve had a few months to reflect on my return to Northern California, and I am truly excited about leading UC Davis to new heights. What I appreciate about UC Davis is the focus on academic excellence, scholarship, sustainability, diversity, upward mobility for our students and public service. Those attributes resonate deeply with me.

The UC Davis community stretches far and wide, and one of my first priorities is to embark on a listening tour to meet as many stakeholders as I can. I want to hear from those of you who work or study in Davis and Sacramento. I want to visit alumni to learn what’s on your mind. I want to talk with donors and hear what makes you excited about UC Davis. To community leaders, business leaders, government representatives and other partners, I plan to meet with you, too. My schedule for my first few months is filling up quickly, and my listening tour has already begun.

Another priority will be to develop a strategic plan for UC Davis. The goal is to make sure everyone has an opportunity to provide ideas, and we’ll create these opportunities using a variety of methods and tools. I’ll share more details about the strategic planning process in the days to come. In the meantime, the working title of this communitywide effort will be “To Boldly Go...”

Finally, I intend to engage further with local and regional leaders as well as the business community. We’ve had positive initial interactions already, and I appreciate their interest in learning more about innovation ecosystems that involve university-city-business partnerships and how these might be adapted in our region. I’m confident that a stronger partnership between UC Davis and the greater Sacramento region will benefit us all for decades to come. We have some challenges ahead, but I know each of us is committed to a stronger, healthier community, and we are united in this objective.

Every day I strive to learn something, help someone and make the world better. I hope you’ll join me on this journey.

Thank you for the very warm welcome so far. Go Ags!

Gary S. May
