The University Librarian and Vice Provost of Digital Scholarship (UL&VPDS) is responsible for the leadership and administration of the UC Davis Library, ranked by the Association of Research Libraries among the top research libraries in North America. The UL&VPDS, who reports to the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor, combines very strong library and information technology skills with managerial expertise. They are a member of the Provost’s Leadership Council, the UC Davis Academic Senate, the UC Council of University Librarians, the Board of the Shared Library Facilities, the UC Davis Academic Senate Library Committee, the CIO Strategic Advisory Council, and other campus and systemwide leadership committees. The University Librarian provides overall leadership of the UC Davis Library in support of University research, instruction, patient care and community outreach, and is responsible for maintaining the Library as an academic hub that promotes the effective and innovative use of digital information resources and technologies in discovery and learning.

The University Librarian is responsible for designing and implementing an efficient organizational structure for the libraries overall, for the administration of the Shields Library and the Blaisdell Medical Library, and for coordination with the Mabie Law Library (part of the UC Davis School of Law).

Recognizing the Library’s central role in managing information in all formats, including data and digital media, the UL&VPDS is also responsible for fostering digital scholarship by faculty, students, and researchers across UC Davis, and leading related digital initiatives, both short and long-term. They are responsible for the administrative oversight of the University’s DataLab, including research support, academic planning, and coordination with data technology and analytics units across the University. The UL&VPDS will also define, convene, organize, document, and manage (as appropriate) other major initiatives that employ digital resources and technologies in support of the research, teaching, and public service missions of the University. These may include organizational and technical aspects of such things as data governance, research intelligence, informatics, research computing, digital publishing, and online education. The UL&VPDS has a role that is different from and complementary to the Chief Information Officer and Vice Provost of Information and Educational Technology and will regularly consult and collaborate on technology solutions as appropriate with him/her.

The recruitment advisory committee is led by co-chairs Michael Rios, Vice Provost for Public Scholarship and Engagement, and Kathryn Olmsted, Professor, Department of History. The committee also includes faculty members, representatives from the ASUCD and the Graduate Student Association, as well as representation from Staff Assembly and externally. The complete roster is available as a PDF.
