CHANCELL-ING: Aggies Moving into Summer

Welcome to the start of the Davis summer, and I hope that each of you is enjoying a wonderful Fourth of July weekend with friends, family and community.

At UC Davis, we’re celebrating 250 years of the United States by showcasing innovations that have helped UC Davis shape the world we live in today. From the wine that we drink to the air that we breathe, UC Davis innovation continues to shape a better world right here in Davis and across the globe.

While our campus feels quieter in the summer, that work continues. We’re conducting research, supporting our summer programs and preparing for the new academic year in September.

And, as always, we welcome the Davis community to enjoy what our campus has to offer.

On July 1, UC Davis planted its flag in the Mountain West Conference for most of our sports, including basketball, soccer and track and field. By joining the Mountain West Conference, we’re building on an already strong foundation for our student-athletes and campus. It’s expected to benefit our wider community as well, with more visitors from universities across the country who will likely boost local businesses.

Our student-athletes, whether in person or on television, are some of our university’s most powerful ambassadors. They represent the traits that make UC Davis an excellent university, demonstrating teamwork and the power of working together to achieve great things.

Aggie football returns this fall to compete in the Big Sky Conference, bringing another season of exciting matchups, longtime rivalries and unforgettable Saturdays at UC Davis Health Stadium. Season and single-game tickets are on sale now. We look forward to welcoming families, friends, alumni and fans from across our region back to campus for another memorable season.

Come root for our Aggies as they make a new mark in the Mountain West Conference and continue to lead the Big Sky Conference. If you can’t attend in person, there are many ways to cheer for us online. The UC Davis Athletics website can help you find ways to connect.

Meanwhile, our campus is busy hosting our annual summer camps for children of various ages. Our UC Davis Summer Youth Programs are more than just a fun way for local K-12 students to spend the summer — they serve as a launching pad for future innovators and creators.

Young people also participate in programs dedicated to veterinary medicine, agriculture, music, crafts, sports, dance and many others. We hope these participants are future Aggies in the making.

Meanwhile, our UC Davis Summer Sessions are underway for current students. They offer more than 700 courses that help students get ahead of their academic workload and perhaps graduate early.

For our neighbors, I welcome you to unwind and cool off at the UC Davis Recreation Pool, take a morning stroll through our world-class Arboretum, or bowl at the Memorial Union. You can also grab a bite of global cuisine at our Latitude Restaurant near Tecero Residence Halls, which is open for summer hours through Sept. 11.

Don’t forget that we have wonderful campus art exhibits. They reflect our university’s commitment to fostering cultural connections, while making art accessible to everyone in Davis.

Visit Shields Library to view the “Celebrating 100 Years of the Mother Road: Route 66” through Aug. 19. The exhibit spotlights one of the country’s most mythic roads through historical documents.

The renowned Gorman Museum of Native American Art is showcasing a multi-media exhibition of Shelley Niro’s work that runs through Aug. 30. Though the Manetti Shrem Museum is closed for much of the summer, you can look forward to its opening of the Woody De Othello exhibition on Aug. 12.

Speaking of art, the UC Davis Craft Center is still enrolling for summer classes. They include painting workshops, crochet, digital photography and many other artistic media to keep you inspired and surrounded by a like-minded community.

Even when school is out, UC Davis remains a place for the community to come together. And those opportunities will only increase with our move to the Mountain West Conference.

I look forward to seeing you on campus soon. Go Ags!
