2017: Listening and Learning

2017: Listening and Learning

From his first day, Chancellor Gary May’s mission was to meet with as many people in the UC Davis community as possible. He wanted to know what excited them about the university. He wanted to know what they wanted UC Davis to be like in 10 years, and what was the best way to get there.

This listening tour stretched across the Davis and Sacramento campuses, Lake Tahoe, Bodega Bay, and around the country. He met with students and also helped some of them move into campus housing at the start of the academic year. He toured the new Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing, where he and his wife LeShelle were treated to a breakfast reception that included “Star Trek”-themed cookies. Chancellor May met with the football team, the UC Davis Police Department, and with alumni across the country to get their perspectives as well.

In October, Chancellor May was formally inaugurated during his investiture ceremony. He was surrounded by family, mentors and mentees, and a welcoming UC Davis community. Days later, Chancellor May showed his support for DACA students in Washington D.C. while speaking at a press conference along with Members of Congress.
