Chancell-ing Column

The smoky days of mid-November were unlike anything UC Davis had experienced.

You become an Aggie Hero through your everyday actions and words.

With the new academic year well underway, I wake up every morning anxious to take on the new day.

Just like the classic TV theme to “The Jeffersons” says, “We’re moving on up!”

What I’ve learned in my first year is that Davis residents care deeply about their community and want to see UC Davis and its chancellor be successful.

The idea of the “starving student” might be a longstanding archetype about the sacrifices made in higher education. But, I say it’s time to end this notion now.

The best way to honor those who helped you become successful is to help others become successful like you.

I am often reminded of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  Sometimes it’s as simple as pressing the shuffle on my iPod and hearing the lyrics of “Pride (In the Name of Love)” by the rock band U2.
