Aggie Hero: Julie Amaro

Note: This month, UC Davis honors all of its heroes on the front lines. Aggie Hero and UC Davis Health nurse Julie Amaro is a representative of the front line heroes; but there are so many more who have been instrumental in the university’s battle against COVID-19.

Sometimes nurses get sick; it’s a hazard of the job.

But when Julie Amaro, a nurse in the Medical Intensive Care Unit at UC Davis Health developed a cough on a Wednesday in March, she said she still “felt fine.”

Aggie Hero: Rocky Mesa

For many of us, haircuts come as a careful and precise choice to do away with our loved locks. But for Rocky Mesa, the choice to shave the hair he’d been growing for four years down to his scalp was “a split-second thing.”

Let’s rewind: on Dec. 4, 2019, Mesa was attending to his duties as a senior custodian at the UC Davis Medical Center when he heard patient Anci Titus expressing discomfort at the prospect of having to shave her head for skin graft surgery.

Aggie Hero: Davares Robinson

Davares Robinson knows from experience that the academic journey can be full of twists and turns. He came to UC Davis to pursue a pre-med curriculum and become an anesthesiologist, but today he is keenly focused on educational justice and equity.

He will graduate this spring as a political science-public service major and wants to influence higher education policy and bolster student retention for marginalized communities.
